History of Greek Sports

Greek sports has been around since 776 B.C.. They created the olympics which we now play. The olympics was only played by Greek. The olympics only had 4 games: Boxing,wrestling,chariot racing and running. The rules of the games were different than how we play them now. Boxing was played until one of the men were on the ground or knocked out. Boxers could keep hitting the other even if he was on the ground. Boxers had no weight classes and fought with no gloves on.

Wrestling was another sport that the greeks played. There were 2 forms of wresting: upright and ground. Upright wrestling was the first man two throw his opponent to the ground first. Ground wrestling is something like upright except, you can hit and kick your opponent.

Chariot racing was a famous sports. Each racers had four horses to race with. The racers raced around a pole on each side of the stadium. They raced around these poles 24 times.

There were 3 types of races that they ran. Dolichos which was a 2 1/4 miles long. The Stade Race and Diaulo were alike. They were short and ran on foot.
